Serra Cafema

The most remote camp in Namibia – and perhaps the whole of southern Africa – Serra Cafema is truly unique. Situated under large, shady albida trees and with uninterrupted views of the Kunene River, guests can truly disconnect, unwind and relax to the sound of rushing water in an awe inspiring environment.

The stylish and comfortable lodge (rebuilt in 2018) is perched on the edge of the permanently-flowing Kunene River – an anomaly in the desert. The aeons-old impact on the geology in the Marienfluss and Hartmann’s valley has created a lunar- like landscape surrounded by sand dunes of the Namib Desert and a meandering band of green.  â€‹

Hoanib

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp

In the remote area of Kaokoveld in Namibia’s Kunene region lays the extraordinary Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. Located in a broad valley near the confluence of two tributaries of the Hoanib river and surrounded by gravel-strewn plains, the incredible Namib Desert and iconic Skeleton Coast National Park, Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is known as one of the most remote and luxurious camps in the area.

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is a center for research and conservation of the desert-adapted predators of this harsh region including the desert adapted lion and brown hyena. Game drives explore this isolated area, moving along the riverbed’s narrow ribbon of vegetation, where a surprising wealth of desert-adapted animals are often seen including the desert adapted elephant and giraffe.

The unforgiving Skeleton Coast, with its shipwreck remains and noisy colonies of Cape fur seals, is accessed either by a fascinating drive or scenic flight, depending on the weather.

Elephant sightings are always exciting and there have been a few very special ones lately –calves sliding down dunes, seeming to thrive on the thrill of it!  A once in a life time sight!

Entirely different to the rugged mountains and valleys inland, the Skeleton Coast hosts Cape fur seals in their thousands along with black-backed jackals and Brown Hyena. Birds are equally diverse, with regular endemics like Rüppell's korhaan, Benguela long-billed lark and lark-like bunting. Towards the coast, the bird community changes and Tractrac chat can be seen, as well as Jaegers and Skuas found around the seal colonies.
